T he first time I heard Brenda Williams suggest she had given up on the possibility that she would walk again was in court Tuesday as she told Circuit Court Judge Paul M. Burch why the woman, Katherine Johnson, who put her in a wheelchair, should be given the maximum sentence for her crimes. “I don’t have a forgiving heart at this time,” Williams said about the purse-snatcher who ran her over with a car and dragged her on the pavement of the Myrtle Beach Kmart’s parking lot as she escaped Williams’ attempts to try to stop her.

Residents coping with job losses, home foreclosures and dwindling returns on investments in the grinding nationwide economic downturn have increasingly turned to pawn shops for cash, according to spot checks of Grand Strand firms. Cash-strapped customers have been selling or pawning once-prized luxury items such as expensive Rolex watches, heirloom sterling silver pieces and other symbols of formerly upscale lifestyles to stay afloat until they find new jobs or resolve the financial crunches that have beset them, pawn shop managers said. High on the list of assets they have turned to are damaged jewelry or rings, and necklaces and bracelets they no longer wear or want.

Recycling test picks up fans

A small housing development along S.C. 90 has a big say in whether curbside recycling will become a reality in Horry County. And so far, it’s going pretty well, said Esther Murphy, recycling supervisor for Horry County Solid Waste Authority. In the month since the six-month pilot curbside pickup program started at Heritage Preserve, trucks have picked up 2,500 pounds of recyclables from the 52 homes that are participating.

The lawyer for the former executive director of the Waccamaw Economic Opportunity Council said Wednesday that EOC board member David Eagleton did not give a complete account of her client’s hearing before the agency’s grievance committee at the last board meeting. Eagleton, the board’s first vice chairman and chairman of the grievance committee, told board members that neither an ex-employee nor her representative showed up at a scheduled meeting and that the committee recommended her firing be upheld. Eagleton did not name the employee, but Henrietta Golding, attorney for former agency executive director Beth Fryar, said it could be her.

W hile we were paying attention to other things, a woman in Yemen took a bomb hidden inside a printer cartridge to a UPS office to be shipped to an address in Chicago. Another homemade bomb buried inside a Hewlett Packard desktop printer was shipped through FedEx. Both bombs made their way in transit through multiple countries before U.S. and other intelligence officials were tipped off about their presence before they could do any harm
