Attorney general suspends some work at N.C. crime lab

The outside investigation of the state crime lab has led North Carolina’s attorney general to suspend the six-agent unit that analyzes bloodstain patterns. Attorney General Roy Cooper said Friday that he asked the two former assistant directors with the Federal Bureau of Investigation who are investigating the lab to review cases involving bloodstain pattern analysis. They agreed that the unit’s work should be suspended temporarily until all issues have been reviewed, Cooper said.

Immigration skirmish brews in quiet S.C. town

In a quiet Southern bedroom community of gardens and parks across the country from Arizona, another skirmish in the battle over illegal immigration is brewing. Summerville Councilman Walter Bailey, worried there is a void in immigration laws, has proposed an ordinance that goes farther than state law, which was sharpened two years ago to allow police to identify illegal immigrants for deportation. The proposal would prevent illegal immigrants from living in the town of 45,000, which calls itself “Flower Town in the Pines,” and in most cases prevent them from working here.

Renovation of Gothic cathedral nears an end

Scaffolding still obscures the entrance of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, and inside craftsmen are busy manning miter saws and layering ceiling plaster and floor tiles. But a sneak peek inside the Gothic downtown church suggests a glorious restoration, once the $7 million project is finished. It has been a long three years for the 4,200 members of the congregation, who have worshipped and wed inside the adjacent Averyt Hall in the Trinity Center for Missions and Ministry during the absence from the cathedral.
