A former North Carolina sheriff is not getting any help from the local Republican Party in his bid to reclaim the office he lost after pleading guilty to felony obstruction of justice and resigning six years ago, a newspaper reported Saturday. Gerald Hege said last week that he doesn’t need the support of leaders of the county party he helped build to win back his job as Davidson County sheriff. County party chairman Lance Barrett says he doesn’t expect Hege to participate in party events before the primary.

Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce officials plan Tuesday to ask Hilton Head for a $300,000 special allocation from a reserve fund set up so the town can market itself after a disaster. The chamber already sought and received $200,000 from the same fund for a promotional blitz in the Atlanta and Charlotte areas last year – in addition to its annual statutory allotment of accommodations tax revenues and supplemental grants. Now, the chamber is seeking more public money: It wants state lawmakers to pass a bill that would allow the town and other Beaufort County municipalities to increase their sales tax rates by one percentage point to pay for tourism marketing and tourism-related capital projects.
