Two Republican state lawmakers say they’ll attempt to overturn a new admissions policy that allows illegal immigrants to attend North Carolina’s community colleges, arguing it’s unfair to legal residents in a tough economy. First lady keeps low profile, will miss event

First lady Jenny Sanford will not attend Saturday’s First Ladies Walk for Life, an annual event she attended last year and has attended sporadically in the past. The popular event, which attracts thousands of participants, is named for Columbia first lady Beth Coble, Mayor Bob Coble’s wife. Beth Coble helped organize the first walk, and the first lady of South Carolina has been an invited guest.

New N.C. statutes launch today

Starting today, North Carolina residents need to be more careful about what goes in the trash and what goes in the recycling bin. Under a new state law, plastic bottles are banned from landfills as a way to encourage recycling, build the state’s green industry and reduce trash that winds up in the ground. “It’s not at all about penalizing people,” said Chris Frazier with the Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance, which has been leading a statewide education effort to get the word out about the change.

Groups sue Freestyle for lack of payment

Lawsuits against Freestyle Music Park for nonpayment are starting to stack up, with two more filed this week. A two-man band filed a $9,450 lawsuit Wednesday for unpaid performances, while Thomas Supply Co. of Myrtle Beach filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the park for $3,997.40 in unpaid supplies. Freestyle officials are tight-lipped about the financial situation of the park, but say they’re good for coming up with the money.
