Three first-timers have signed up to climb into the political ring and run for seats on the Myrtle Beach City Council this fall, bringing the field of candidates to nine as of Monday. Businessman Bill Howard would like to sit in the mayor’s chair, choosing to pit himself against incumbent Mayor John Rhodes, while Terry Mitchum and Keith Compton will run for one of the three regular council seats that will be available.

Two men are in critical condition with complications from swine flu in a Georgetown County hospital, and the state reported Monday that a Midlands child was the first in South Carolina to die of the disease, putting people on heightened alert. Local schools, which have started classes in the past few weeks, say they are serious about preventing the spread of swine flu. More than 500 cases of the swine flu have been confirmed in the state since the disease was first reported in April.

Prowler | On Aug.18, officers responding to a prowler call were approached by a woman, 45, who had her dog with her. She said her dog could find the prowler, who she said was her ex-husband. She said she had a restraining order against him. The officer asked how she knew the prowler was her ex-husband
